Getting to the right place

With the 2020 Olympic Games on the horizon, I've recently been inspired by remarkable Olympians of our past.

One Olympian, in particular, came to mind last week while I was on the leadership court with Allie, sweating it out and getting comfortable feeling uncomfortable. His name is Greg Louganis, a two time Gold Medal winner in diving.

Lougainis has been quoted saying: "I'm a real perfectionist. But that is the irony. In order to do it perfectly, I have to let go of perfection a little. For instance, in diving there's a 'sweet spot' on the board, right at the end. I can't always hit it perfectly. Sometimes, I'm a little back from it. Sometimes, I'm a little over. But the judges can't tell that. I have to deal with whatever takeoff I have been given. I can't leave my mind on the board. I have to stay in the present. I have to be relaxed enough t o clue into the memory of how to do it. That's why I train so hard - not just to do it right, but to do it right from all the wrong places."

To me, what Greg is saying is leadership is about getting to the right place from the wrong place. Check out my video to hear how last week I found myself in the wrong place, and how I chose to get to the right place.

Then ask yourself this: Where in your life (at work or at home) as a leader might you benefit from saying "I am in the wrong place"? What is one new choice you can make or action you can take to get to the right place?

Much compassion,
